Terraces – Del Mar, California

Set against the dramatic slopes of Del Mar, this residence transforms a steep backyard into a multi-tiered sanctuary, where thoughtful design meets natural beauty. Carefully integrated into the terrain, three distinct terraces create a seamless flow of relaxation, recreation, and gathering spaces, each offering a unique perspective of the landscape.

The existing concrete steps were embraced and extended, blending effortlessly into the slope while guiding movement through the space. Beneath the delicate canopy of a blooming melaleuca tree, the first terrace provides a serene sitting area, where dappled sunlight filters through blossoms, casting an enchanting glow. Higher up, the second terrace serves as a cozy retreat, centered around a fire pit with built-in seating—perfect for cool coastal evenings and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

At the lowest level, a playful putting green reflects the owner’s love for golf, introducing a dynamic element to the design. Closest to the house, an inviting outdoor dining area with a built-in barbecue sets the stage for lively family gatherings, effortlessly blending indoor and outdoor living. This multi-tiered retreat celebrates both function and beauty, transforming a challenging slope into a harmonious and engaging landscape.
